A couple families enjoyed the White and Yellow courses while the rest of the folks tackled one or two of the "Dogbones" courses. As advertised, Dogbones #2 proved to be the more interesting one. Despite two stolen flags, we can make some interesting comparisons with the routes. I calculated the straight line distance for all routes submitted. Generally, shorter is better, but obstacles can make a difference in the actual distance. You can look at the map fragments and compare any of the routes to get your own idea; also, you can study the courses first and pick your own routes before seeing what others did.

Update - June 8

Course statistics-

Dogbones #1: 16 checkpoints, 3.9 km
Dogbones #2: 12 checkpoints, 3.6 km (trickier to figure out.)
White: 9 checkpoints, 1.7 km
Yellow: 9 checkpoints, 2.4 km

What's the Deal?

Dogbones returns! Time to bring it to the South Bay. And we'll have a fun point to point course too. Dogbones will be about 3 to 4 km in length, and the point to point course 2 to 3 km. Both courses will be pretty flat. You can also create and try out more courses using the pin flags set for the other courses.

For examples and explanations of dogbones and a sample map, see the recent Lakeside writeup. Also note that the routes taken varied quite a bit! What's awesome about Dogbones is that in a smaller park where it's "hard to get lost" you can create a pretty interesting navigation challenge.

No nasty veggies! Well, I won't be serving those parts of the park to you. Running shoes and shorts are fine.

Courses open 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., cost is $5, social option to follow nearby. Downtown Los Gatos?

Directions:

The entrance to Vasona Lake Park is located on Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos. From southbound Highway 17, exit at Lark Avenue, follow signs for Los Gatos Blvd., and turn left on Lark Ave. Turn right on Los Gatos Boulevard and right again onto Blossom Hill Road. After about 1/2 a mile, the park entrance is a right turn at 333 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos, CA 95032. You'll need to pay a machine $6 to get a parking pass just after you've entered the park.

Then proceed down the park road, passing the first few parking lots until you get to a fork in the road. Take the left fork. After you cross the creek, you'll pass a parking lot, then when you get to the next parking lot, turn right and look for the terraloco signs and table. There will be a checkpoint marker placed where you should turn off the park road.

Public Transit:

From the Winchester Transit Center (end stop of the light rail line,) take the VTA 48 bus line towards downtown Los Gatos. Get off at Santa Cruz Ave. and Mariposa, walk east along Blossom Hill Road, then turn left and walk into the park.
