Tricky Trail Mix @ Santa Teresa 11/22/2008

This was trickier than I expected. The course proved to be quite challenging to finish in 2 hours - I was predicting it could be finished in 65 minutes, and the best time was 80. And I didn't predict that I'd lose my car keys, with all materials locked up, when registration was supposed to be open. Thanks to all for keeping a cool head and keeping the faith, and Jeff Lanam for running an impromptu clinic while I retrieved them from checkpoint 22 - fortunately, a nearby checkpoint.

Couldn't have ordered better weather for an event - mild, sunny, clear - it really made the park a beautiful scene. After a few minutes of my advice and urgings regarding the course (especially about the minefields of rocks) everyone turned their maps over at 10:20 to start the course. And off they went, some choosing to immediately tackle the interesting challenge of the 4 or 5 checkpoints off trail on the aerial photo.

Then I met up with Boy Scout troop 43 from Salinas and their leaders, and we had a training clinic on the first few checkpoints of the course, and then they set off as well.

I prayed for safe returns... and waited. Mikkel Conradi was the first to emerge unscathed and managed to get all 1300 points worth of checkpoints in just under 80 minutes. Roger Michel and Dennis Wilkinson followed 12 and 13 minutes later... then they started to trickle in, with the floodgates opening in the last 2 or 3 minutes before the course closing time.

And the photo proved to be tricky for sure. Now, I wasn't planning to map the whole park thoroughly in such a short time frame, but I wanted to use a large area, so using the photo was the way to do it, and it also provided a neat change of pace and challenge. I will try to make the controls easier to discern next time - the magenta circles did not show up well on the photo if you have any color blindness, so we thought of using white circles on the photo.

I was glad to hear there were no serious problems with the map. I allotted myself 2 days of field checking and 1 day of drafting, and managed to get a square km mapped, at a high level of detail. All those rocks can make you crazy, let me tell you.

Thank You
